A Few Words on... The 1975 - The 1975
I'd like to pride myself in not getting swept up in undeserved hype. For a while, this didn't apply to The 1975; a new band which took the unusual step of having four EP's of material before releasing their debut album of sixteen tracks of re-recorded and new material.
Up until their self-titled debut album; I was very much looking forward to it, finding their previous EP's always consisting of one or more tracks that were inventive and prosperous. Of course, nothing matched the adrenaline-filled Sex but tracks like The City, Chocolate, You and Head. Cars. Bending were short and sweet synth-pop goodness and the prospect of an album filled with something similar, if not better marked the inevitable album as one to watch.
Unfortunately; the album itself is a tiresome, long and boring affair. There's a few sprinklings of something great (a re-recorded version of Sex, the aforementioned Chocolate and The City, Settle Down) but the vast majority of the album is aimless filler, indistinguishable from one another, simply bloating the album to an over-indulged record of nothingness.
Whilst The 1975's previous EP releases still hold-up with elements of darkness and a more refined sound that something like The Big Pink have tried to capture with varying success; The 1975's debut album is a mindless, long and boring affair that, despite having a few impressive highlights, has far too many dull moments that reduce the record to the dreaded to being an average at best release.
